Basic Principles of Biblical Counceling
Basic Principles of Biblical Counseling: Meeting Counseling Needs Through the Local Church
"The local church should and can successfully assume responsibility within its ranks for restoring troubled people to full, productive, creative lives."

"If we are to hope for success in such an immense and seriously neglected responsibility, pastors need to return to the biblical model not of ministering to their people but of equipping their people to minister to each other by using their spiritual gifts."

"Congregations need to regain that wonderful sense of ‘koinonia’ fellowship and to practice true community."

Sample text from Basic Principles of Biblical Counseling: Meeting Counseling Needs Through the Local Church

"Counselors often encourage the expression of feelings and entertain the optimistic hope that if enough negative feelings are poured out, the person will be rid of his emotional problems… Encouraging catharsis as a curative end in itself fails to acknowledge the reality of a sinful nature which has a limitless supply of negative feelings. Looking for the cause of an internal emotional problem in an external circumstance strips the individual of responsibility for his problems and flatly contradicts the Lord's teaching that it is not what enters into a man that defiles him but what proceeds from within."

– from chapter 4

"I am concerned that in the appropriately enthusiastic reception granted to the concept of biblical counseling a certain gentle sensitivity to deep human needs may be lost…. Without retreating an inch on the position that people are responsible for their own problems by living sinfully, I believe that the biblical counselor needs to look a little deeper into the thinking behind the choice to live sinfully. . . . In order to understand biblical counseling, we must identify clearly the deepest personal needs of people."

– from chapter 5
