MOM and POP Weekend
 

In 2010 we will be offering an extended-weekend retreat for parents. We're calling this PILOT weekend a MOM and POP retreat: Movement Of Mystery toward the Purpose Of Parenting.

John White, an old psychiatrist friend of mine, wrote a book called Parents in Pain. Only a few parents couldn’t relate to the title. Parenting is one of the scariest, most confusing, and most rewarding or heartbreaking adventures of life.

Our MOM & POP Weekend (30 parents: couples, single mothers and fathers), will provide “signposts pointing into the fog”. That’s a phrase I borrowed from theologian N. T. Wright that fit our Weekend of Oneness for married couples and will equally well fit our weekend for parents.

No “expert” can totally lift the fog that we step into when we try to understand what’s happening in our kids and decide how best to respond. There are no formulas that reliably work as planned. The battle to win your child’s heart for God will remain a mystery.

But - God has provided clear signposts that move us into the fog with deeply released loving strength and Spirit-revealed practical wisdom. In the MOM & POP weekend, we will:

1. look carefully at specific, real-life parenting situations;
2. think hard about what we can know about the inside world of our children and ourselves; 
3. and learn to follow Biblical signposts into the fog with settled (not frantic) hope that we’re tagging along behind God’s Spirit as He does what only He can do in the lives of the kids we love so much. 
    

Among many other topics, we’ll look at:

• Stages in the development of foolishness
• The two core questions every child is asking
• Good and bad answers to those questions
• What it means to arouse spiritual thirst in children (at any age) by the way parents live
• Raising “Kingdom of God” children vs. “Kingdom of the world” children.
   

Mom & Pop will be a practical, honest, realistic, reflective opportunity to think and pray hard with other Christian mothers and fathers about the high calling of parenting, and to recognize and follow the signposts God has provided to parents who long to parent well.
